With the recent announcement regarding the new API SQ, ILSAC GF-7A, and GF-7B motor oil standards, a number of questions have emerged

API has announced the release of the new SQ, ILSAC GF-7 standards and has initiated licensing for the first allowable use, set for March 31, 2025.

It was significant to see that shortly after API’s announcement, some industry stakeholders began to question the new API specifications for SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12. It has been noted with concern that these specifications are not included within the ILSAC framework and do not conform to the JASO standards designated for these grades.

Despite the limited applications of these oils, it is noteworthy that ILSAC, representing car manufacturers, has opted not to incorporate these low-viscosity grades into the new ILSAC GF-7 standards and appears to have no firm plans to incorporate them into a future GF-8 standard.

A significant difference arises mainly because the JASO specifications feature a specific fuel economy test, which is absent in the API framework, along with other distinctions. This situation prompts inquiries regarding the reasoning behind separating these grades and their omission from ILSAC coverage.

Acknowledging the industry’s questions about the new specifications, it seems reasonable to expect that API will offer more insights to address any concerns.
