Shell Launches DLC Fluid S3 to Power the Future of Data Center Cooling

Shell is stepping up to meet the demands of the AI age with the launch of Shell DLC Fluid S3, a breakthrough direct liquid cooling (DLC) solution designed for the next generation of high-performance computing. As data centers grapple with soaring heat loads from dense server racks and AI-intensive workloads, this propylene glycol-based fluid offers a powerful, efficient alternative to traditional air cooling.

Shell DLC Fluid S3 specifically targets the hottest components—CPUs and GPUs—directly, achieving an improvement in power usage effectiveness (PUE) of up to 27%1 when compared to air cooling. Additionally, it provides freeze protection down to −10 °C (14°F) and features an extended fluid lifespan of over six years, helping operators minimize maintenance expenses and maximize uptime.

“With Shell DLC Fluid S3, Shell now offers both direct-to-chip and full immersion cooling solutions,” said Aysun Akik, VP New Business Development and Global Key Accounts, Shell Lubricants. “We’re not just keeping data centers cool in the age of AI — we’re powering the future of digital infrastructure.”

The new fluid meets Open Compute Project PG25 standards, ensuring wide compatibility with metals, plastics, and elastomers used in server construction. It’s also fluorescent green for easy leak detection and provides robust corrosion protection—especially for aluminium alloys.

“Our growing range of advanced liquid cooling solutions is designed to meet the diverse needs of modern data centres both today, and tomorrow,” Akik added. “They are backed by the strength of Shell’s global footprint, supply chain and five technology development hubs around the globe.”

What sets Shell DLC Fluid S3 apart is its combination of technical excellence and system compatibility: it offers long-term corrosion protection across a wide range of metals, superior heat transfer performance—particularly for copper-based heat sinks—and is free of borates, silicates, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, enhancing stability and material compatibility. Shell says, this unique formulation delivers both performance and peace of mind for data center operators facing the evolving challenges of high-density computing.

By bridging innovation with sustainability, Shell DLC Fluid S3 helps operators future-proof their infrastructure. It aligns with Shell’s broader commitment to low-carbon technologies and supports the industry’s transition toward more energy-efficient, environmentally responsible data center solutions.
