Shell Partially Restarts Pearl GTL, but Base-Oil Recovery Timeline Remains Unclear
Limited operations have resumed at Shell’s Qatar gas-to-liquids facility, but the restart report does not specify when normal lubricant base-oil shipments will return.
Shell has partially restarted its Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility in Qatar following damage sustained during the Middle East conflict in March. For lubricant blenders and marketers, however, the restart leaves an important question unanswered: when will dependable base-oil deliveries resume?
According to an October 8 Reuters report, Shell said the partial restart would allow it to build limited product inventories. Its ability to ship products remains subject to regional security conditions, including safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Developed by Shell in partnership with QatarEnergy, Pearl uses natural gas from Qatar’s North Field to produce a range of GTL products, including base oils, gasoil, kerosene and naphtha. Reuters describes Pearl’s full capacity as approximately 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. That figure encompasses multiple products and should not be confused with the facility’s lubricant base-oil capacity.
One of Pearl’s two processing trains was damaged in March. A Shell spokesperson told Reuters that repairs to Train 2 are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
Naphtha Movements Do Not Confirm Base-Oil Recovery
The restart comes as QatarEnergy has resumed some contractual naphtha deliveries and offered a spot tender that included Pearl-GTL naphtha. Reuters reported that the tender covered up to 50,000 metric tons across several naphtha grades.
Those movements indicate that some products associated with the facility are returning to the market. They do not establish that lubricant base-oil production or exports have recovered.
Pearl is an important source of GTL base oils used in high-performance lubricant formulations, making its operating status particularly relevant to lubricant manufacturers. But the Reuters report did not disclose current base-oil production volumes, confirm resumed base-oil shipments or provide a timetable for normal deliveries.
The expected completion of Train 2 repairs provides a milestone for the facility’s recovery, not a firm date for restoring normal lubricant base-oil supply. Shell has said safe and reliable operations at Pearl remain dependent on regional security and the safe passage of shipments through Hormuz.
For blenders and marketers, the practical indicators to watch are sustained base-oil production, export availability and predictable deliveries. Pearl’s partial restart is encouraging, but the reported information does not yet demonstrate that its lubricant base-oil supply has returned to normal.
