Russia’s motor oil market is showing signs of increasing strain as refinery disruptions and tighter access to imported products push prices higher and extend delivery times.

Russian market reporting cited by Kommersant indicates that lubricant prices generally have risen about 15% to 20% since the beginning of the year, with significantly larger increases reported for some products. Certain segments have reportedly seen increases of roughly 40%, while some imported and specialized lubricants have risen by 50% or more, with increases as high as 100% cited in isolated cases. The wide range suggests the impact is highly dependent on product, brand and supply channel rather than representing a uniform increase across the Russian motor oil market.

The lubricant pressures are developing alongside broader disruptions in Russia’s refining system. Ukrainian drone attacks have forced unplanned maintenance at major refineries and reduced Russian refined-product output and exports. Russia’s seaborne oil-product exports fell more than 30% in July from June on a daily basis, according to Reuters calculations based on industry data.

The situation remained fluid this week. Ukraine reported another strike on Tatneft’s TANECO refinery in Tatarstan, one of Russia’s major refining complexes, adding to the risk of further disruptions to downstream product availability. 

For the lubricant market, the reports point to uneven but meaningful supply pressure. The highest reported price increases appear concentrated in products more exposed to constrained imports and alternative sourcing channels, while domestic refinery disruptions are adding another layer of uncertainty to availability and cost.
